Our Client, a leading criminal defence, family law, and prison law firm with over 15 branches across England and Wales are currently recruiting an experienced clerk for their Bristol Crown Court Department, covering courts in Bristol, Wiltshire and beyond.

Job Description

The Crown Court Department Clerk manages and supervises their department by maintaining control of the workflows and managing advocate resources.

Responsibilities and duties:

  • Diaries - ensuring all diaries are up to date and all hearings are covered by an appropriate advocate.
  • File management - ensuring all files comply with standards set by Lexcel and internal company policies whilst ensuring funding is in place, setting up files and preparing files for caseworkers and advocates.
  • Monitoring the secure email system and liaising with the courts, CPS, caseworkers and advocates to assist with case progression
  • Arranging prison visits and conferences for caseworkers and advocates
  • Work flow control - allocating files to caseworkers to carry on with case preparation, maintaining and updating the crown court Excel spreadsheet.
  • Client Care - first point of contact for new client queries.
  • Admin - letters to clients and other parties, filing, chasing and following up queries, maintaining undertaking register
  • Billing - submitting file claims at the end of each case ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Assistance with archiving of closed files.

Person Specification

  • Razor sharp organisational skills.
  • A supreme eye for detail and the ability to work within a high pressure, high workload environment.
  • Be self confident, proactive and able to develop good working relationship with the in-house team of advocates and caseworkers, surrounding barristers' chambers and court staff.
  • Confident and clear communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Be computer literate with experience of using Microsoft Office packages.
  • Must be able to multi-task, think on your feet and prioritise workloads.

Experience within either a criminal solicitors office or a barristers' chambers are required, with salary reflecting experience and skills.

This position is full time with the working hours being Mondays - Fridays 09:00 17:00, with one hour for lunch.
