The Legal PA of the Year award goes to someone who truly stands out in supporting busy legal teams with skill, organisation and dedication. In 2024, Jo Benjamin, Senior Legal PA at Baker McKenzie, won the category thanks to her impressive ability to juggle complex tasks with calm and efficiency.

But it’s not just about the day-to-day. Jo has also made a real difference leading her firm’s Charity Committee, helping raise important funds for London’s Air Ambulance. Her hard work, professionalism, and genuine care make her a fantastic example of what it means to be a top Legal PA.

How did you become a Legal PA?

I always wanted to join the Police, but after a stint as a Special Constable, I decided that a career as a Legal PA was a far safer option.

What skills do you have that you think help you to succeed in your role as a Legal PA?

Diplomacy, conscientiousness, efficiency and an ability to build strong interpersonal relationships…coupled with a sense of humour.

Can you share a memorable moment from your career journey that you think led to this achievement?

I was asked to lead our Charity Committee, and this coincided with a new charity partnership with London’s Air Ambulance. Since then, I have driven numerous fundraising events and was instrumental in obtaining a £100,000 Gift Aid rebate on donations via the Charities Aid Foundation. I was bursting with pride when the two new helicopters were launched this year with Baker McKenzie’s logo displayed on one of them.

Would you say you learnt anything about yourself and your role during this process?

I am proud. Proud to be a career PA and proud to have found my specialist niche in fundraising – plus I am good at what I do!

How did you find the awards process?

I enjoyed the whole process, especially the interview with Susanna and Sarah which was a real opportunity for me to showcase all I have achieved. To be invited as a finalist, to attend the Awards Dinner, and to meet the other finalists was an absolute privilege – to be in a room of like-minded individuals who were extremely proud to be PAs and Business Professionals.

How do you think winning the Legal PA of the Year award will positively impact your career?

This award will set me apart from other PAs in the legal sector. Hopefully, I will also inspire a younger generation of PAs to seize every opportunity. What might start as a small project could become the making of you!

What advice would you give to someone wanting to take part in the awards in 2025?

Reflect on what you have accomplished this year that makes you stand out. I was honoured when my colleague acknowledged my hard work and nominated me. If you haven't been nominated, believe in your strengths and achievements, and don't hesitate to nominate yourself!
