ILSPA's Legal Secretaries Diploma Course is designed to be suitable for all levels of experience and fit around people's existing commitments, be that work, family or additional studies. We recently had the pleasure of speaking to CJ Carter who recently completed the Diploma with ILSPA. CJ spoke about how she fitted her work around her family and what her studies have now given her the opportunity to do.

What were you doing before you joined ILSPA?
Before and while studying for the Legal Secretary Diploma, I was both a stay-at-home mum, as well as doing work needed for my fiancé's business.

What is it about being a Legal Secretary that interests you?
I always wanted to do the postgraduate course in law, after completing my English Degree, but it was too expensive, so I'm hoping to join a firm doing PA/paralegal work and then see how it goes from there. It is also reasonably paid and I know there is the option, in some firms, to be flexible. I even have friends doing the job from home.

Why did you decide to do ILSPA's Legal Secretaries Diploma course?
Because you gain the equivalent to a Level 3 Diploma. There was also the option of completing the course online. This very much appealed to me, as I am also caring for my two children.

What knowledge and skills did you gain through your studies?
I am now far better at using Microsoft Word. However, for me, the best part was gaining so much knowledge in the area of law. I have found the course extremely interesting and now I want to continue my study into it further.

What are your future career goals?
It has always been my dream to one day be a solicitor but I will take it one step at a time. I don't want to run before I can walk.

What advice would you give to someone considering studying with ILSPA?
The course isn't simply learning to use the relevant packages needed to be a PA, writing letters and filling out forms; it is so much more. You will learn a great deal about English/Welsh law. This, I'm sure, will undoubtedly help you in so many aspects of your life. The tutors are also always available to give you a guiding hand when you need it. They will encourage and support you continually. I would recommend this course to anyone that has an interest in learning more about the law and would like to pursue a career in it.
