If you’re training to become a Legal Secretary or looking to refresh your skills, a valuable skill you can master is audio typing (also known as transcription). Whether you’re transcribing client interviews, legal notes, or court documents, fast and accurate typing skills are essential.

Fortunately, there are some online resources to help you practise your audio typing skills.

Sense-Lang Audio Typing Tutor

Sense-Lang offers an interactive audio typing mode that plays short recordings while you type what you hear. You can control playback speed and difficulty, making it a great place to start if you’re still building your listening accuracy and confidence.

Speechling Dictation Practice

Speechling is a language and dictation platform offering UK and US English exercises. You listen to spoken sentences and type exactly what you hear. It’s especially helpful for developing your ear for different accents, a valuable skill for legal secretaries handling diverse client audio.

Typing.com

Many of our Students and Members will be familiar with this platform as ILSPA often recommend it for people looking to improve their general typing skills. While not specific to audio typing, Typing.com is one of the best tools to improve speed and accuracy. Combining this with regular dictation practice will make your transcription work faster and more precise.

Reed.co.uk – Audio Typing Courses

If you feel you need more support, guidance or something more structured than daily practice at home, then you may consider taking a course. Reed.co.uk lists a range of low-cost courses for audio typing and transcription in the UK. Although currently there are no free courses listed, there are some that are designed specifically for administrative or legal secretarial training, giving you a more structured learning pathway.

Developing strong audio typing skills takes time and steady practice, but every session brings you closer to greater confidence and accuracy in your work. With so many useful resources available, it’s a skill well worth investing in.
