Which Subjects Should I Choose?

We have created this guide to help you choose the right subjects for your Legal Secretaries Diploma. If you are new to law, it can be difficult to know where to start so we have put together our recommendations based on the areas most widely practised by law firms, as well as your own interests and the type of legal work that appeals to you most.

Most Versatile

I want to keep my options open and work in the most common areas of law — choosing areas that are in high demand and will open up more job opportunities.

Why this combination? Civil Litigation, Family Law, and Land Law and Conveyancing are three of the most widely practised areas across general practice and high street firms. Each area has strong, consistent demand for Legal Secretaries and covers a distinct type of client work, giving you the flexibility to move between different departments or firms.

People-Focused

I want to support people through important life events such as buying or selling a property, navigating a divorce, making a will, or managing a loved one's estate.

Why this combination? Family Law, Land Law and Conveyancing, and Wills and Probate are the three pillars of a typical high street general practice firm. These areas frequently overlap in real cases — a divorce may involve property and estate issues simultaneously so this combination gives you strong, practical grounding for client-facing roles.

Business Focused

I have a background or interest in business, from how companies are formed and run, to how contracts work and what happens when disputes arise.

Why this combination? Our Corporate and Commercial Law unit provides a strong grounding in how companies operate, while Contract and Tort, and Civil Litigation give you an understanding of how agreements are made and what happens when things go wrong. Together, these subjects prepare you well for roles in Corporate or Commercial legal teams.

Justice Focused

I am fascinated by criminal law and the justice system, and I am also interested in understanding how civil disputes are resolved through the courts.

Why this combination? Criminal Law is one of the most interesting areas of study, bringing the justice system to life. Pairing it with Contract and Tort, and Civil Litigation means you understand different sides of the justice system while remaining open to a range of Legal Secretary positions.
